21 Gun Salute (1776)

December 7, 2015 by David Adams 1 Comment

Rodney Griffin 001

If anyone, any man, any soldier ever deserved burial with military honors, it has to be Sgt. Griffin of Centralia, Missouri. Killed in action, May 2, 1970. Interred, April 25, 2015.

“No fife did hum nor battle drum did sound it’s dread tattoo.”

…

“And my heart with grief was sore,

For I parted then with valiant men.

Whom I never shall see no more.”

(The Chieftains, The Foggy Dew)

If you have never served in a funeral escort, you might not know why they fire 21 guns. It is simply because 1+7+7+6 = 21.
